So you had COVID, you recovered from it, but you still feel like crap and have lingering, and very annoying, symptoms…wtf is going on?
You might be among millions of others who are suffering from something that has now been deemed “long haulers” or “Long COVID”, where people are still experiencing symptoms 4 weeks or longer after recovery (some even months or years).
“It’s like every day, you reach your hand into a bucket of symptoms, throw some on the table and say, ‘this is you for today’”
– David Putrino, Neuroscientist
Why is it happening, and how long does it last?
Many “long haulers” start feeling better in their fourth or fifth month but recovery is tentative, variable and not guaranteed….months of illness could turn into years of disability. The reality is, we just don’t know, and there have not been enough studies and research to definitively say how long it lasts and what the true long-term impacts are.
But let’s focus on what we DO know, and how you can take a holistic approach to potentially help the healing process.
Akiko Iwasaki, PhD, expert immunologist and professor at Yale School of medicine calls it a “viral ghost”, and explains that fragments of the virus (RNA proteins) linger even after the infection has been cleared and are still capable of stimulating the immune system. COVID-19 infection precedes the appearance of several auto-inflammatory disorders and immune diseases.
What are the symptoms of long haulers?
The list of self-reported symptoms, and the ones from the limited studies conducted so far, is a shockingly long list…
You may be experiencing:
- Hair loss
- Decline in quality of life
- Sleep disturbances
- Lost of taste/smell or altered taste/smell
- Cognitive disturbances/brain fog
- Development of new autoimmune disorders (or reactivation)
- Reactivation of EBV
- Muscle or body aches
- Joint pain/arthritis
- Kidney problems
- Thyroid issues
- Significant decline in Vitamin D levels
- Muscular weakness
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Inability to exercise or be active
- Night sweats
- Changes in menstrual cycle
- GI Dysregulation/Dysbiosis
- Pain Syndrome (Migraines)
- Mental Health Issues
- Dysregulated Immune Response
- Toxic Overload
- The list goes on, and on and on….
Is there anything that can be done about it?

My personal experience
In September of 2021, I got very sick with COVID-19. I had a 102-103 degree fever for 11 days and a wide range of other symptoms. It’s now February 2022 as I currently write this, and I am still experiencing negative side effects caused by what I am deeming for myself as long-covid.
I was diagnosed with an autoimmune kidney disease when I was 18 years old, and over the last 27 years I have kept my kidneys functioning at a very optimal level despite what the doctors told me was possible. They said I would be on dialysis or need a transplant within 5 years, and that changing my diet or lifestyle would have zero impact. It turns out, by doing exactly what they said not to do and by changing my nutrition and lifestyle habits, I have maintained the kidney function of a 20-year old and my doctors are consistently shocked.
Now, I get COVID and in one swoop, all of that work I’ve done in the last 27 years feels washed away as I’m watching my kidney levels and function decline. My hair is falling out in actual clumps, and I very often cry in the shower as I watch my hair surround my feet into the drain. My usually very high energy levels and creative zest for life has declined and I find it incredibly difficult to make it through the day without feeling extremely fatigued. My thyroid function has declined, my gut health is no longer optimal and my overall quality of life has diminished.
At first, I thought I was insane. Then, I attended a conference by some of the leading doctors and experts, and I heard about this “long haulers” business, and I felt immediately validated. I no longer felt crazy or alone, and although it still made me incredibly sad that this is happening, I felt better knowing that it’s being talked about and studied. Granted, I had to drive 6 hours to a conference that was very “hush hush” to even hear this information, because it’s not being presented to the masses via the “mainstream”. I’m very grateful to have been there so I can now pass along this vital information.
I posted a video on my social media after this telling my story and, MY GOD, the amount of people who reached out to me after that video saying they were experiencing the same thing was ASTONISHING! I knew right then that I had to offer whatever help I could to all the people like me who are desperate for answers.
So, being the dietitian and research nerd that I am, I dove in for several weeks into the latest research, protocols and holistic solutions being presented by top experts. I also used my own knowledge and experiences of these practices to put together a holistic healing protocol and a webinar outlining what’s happening and what the next step forward is.
In my research, I wanted to know a few key things:
- what’s really happening with long-covid in the body and how can we understand it on a basic level?
- what are the most common self-reported symptoms and the ones being reported in studies?
- what lab tests are being recommended based on the symptoms?
- what supplementation is being proven most beneficial?
- what holistic modalities and therapies are being shown to be helpful with symptoms?
And with these questions in mind, I found answers that have been helpful in my own experience thus far, and want to share them with as many people as I can!
